Which car would you pick?

Rules are as follows:

You can only take what fits in/around the car.

No support vehicles

Part/service availability must be taken into consideration

You can plan your route, kudos if you include it in the answer or base it on a route taken before by someone else

One Co-driver

You have a limited amount of money.

Fuel quality must be taken into consideration.

NO TRUCKS/SUVS - Only cars.

I’d take a W123, probably a 280CE but most likely a 300TD Wagon.

Same, probably a W123.

Might not be obvious, but I really like the W123, even got a W123 grill in my apartment.

The circumference of the World is roughly 24,000 miles. I think I could make it without a catastrophic breakdown in a fresh-off-the-lot Continental.

You hit a massive pothole in the middle of Namibia, the thin profile tires rupture and the wheels crack.

As much as I hate to say this, Crown Vic. It’s big and beefy, with body on frame construction. Taxi companies pick them up after police departments have destroyed them and continue to run them for hundreds of thousands of miles. The engine is fairly simple, and I feel like it shouldn’t be too finicky with bad gas.

I’m going to be bold and say Mk7 Ford Fiesta or Mk3 VW Golf, depending on the exact path I take. Both are used as rally trainers, so the base cars are tough. You can upfit them with stronger shocks and springs at the start and both can be tuned down to accept crap gas. I would even be bold and run without a co-driver for some more interior room and weight. Keep radio/climate controls/etc...Spare tires and toolbox go on roof. Inside, keep a spare set of the upgraded shocks and springs (if you did that). Most of the other parts are stock, even for the rally car so you’re good there. Then just be a bit diligent about stopping by larger cities for parts or supplies before you leave. Plenty of space for food and water.

If it survives for decades in Africa and India, the Peugeot 504 is good enough for me (give me the Bertone convertible tho). I would start in Lisbon, go through Europe and down the Balkans, through Istambul into Georgia, drive by the Caspian Sea into Tehran, avoiding Afghanistan driving north into the xxxtan countries into China. Then, it would be South Korea/Japan/Taiwan into China again (stopping at HK) so I can drive through Southeast Asia. After Malaysia/Indonesia a ferry to Australia and then to New Zealand. From New Zealand I’d go to Chile and drive through it and Argentina. Then, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. Ferry to Panama because I don’t want to be stranded in the Darrien Gap. After Panama Costa Rica and then Cuba and back to Central America into Mexico until the US border. Drive through the West Coast + the Rockies into British Columbia, keep driving in Canada until Nova Scotia (stopping in Quebec City), then the Canadian big three (Montreal/Ottawa/Toronto), then the US east coast, finishing the trip in Miami.

I’d end up missing India, South Africa and the Gulf countries, but I can accept that

Volvo 240 wagon. Non-turbo, and probably one of the newer ones. Parts availability may screw me in some parts of the world, but they’re good and roomy so I could carry some spares. Plus they’re basically tractors, not hard to fix. I think from a parts availability point of view, a W123 or W124 is likely the right choice, but I like how little there is to go wrong with the 240, while still being comfy and lovely to drive.

504 wagon. Good enough for the depths of Central Africa, good enough for me. Parts may be tricky, but the damn things are so simple that you could probably fix it with twine and a hammer.

As for the route; Start in Anchorage, drive east to St. John’s, Newfoundland, ship car to Ireland, drive from Ireland all the way through Eurasia to Shanghai, take a ferry from Shanghai to Korea, take a ferry from Korea to Japan, then ship my car across the Pacific back to Anchorage.

Are those pictures of the 1977 London-Sydney...?

“Beirut-taxi” four-door W123s are indeed indestructible. What I wonder is which one of the engines (200D/240D/300D) is the most durable, regardless of other considerations.

Nice collection of mileage badges. I once saw an abandoned L319 van with two or three of those.

I’m not sure about the pictures, it’s possible. I’ve had them on my computer since 2010 so I’m unsure of their origin.

I would assume they’re more or less the same.

I got the grill and the 250k from the junkyard, the 250k came from a W126. Sadly the 500k and the 1,000,000 km ones came from ebay. Wanted to add a little something to the grill.
